"The Life of a Modern Console Operator" by: Jos van Noort, Learning Advisor for Simulation and e-Learning for Shell Downstream Manufacturing

The life of a console operator of a manufacturing production unit has changed over the last several years, requiring more specialized training and skill in both how a unit operates and the running of the systems to their best capacity. Included in the experience and knowledge base is a necessary strong safety focus.

I was a panel operator in the early days of my career in the 70’s. From my personal experience, I am in a unique position to observe and, in some instances, participate in the development of those changes that make a console operator the more specialized role we see today.

We are not in the 70’s anymore and the life of a console operator is more challenging. Production Units are more complex as are the control systems in use today. The units are more reliable, operate more efficiently and effectively, include environment and safety devices.

The SimWorld Conference gives us an opportunity to discuss these changes and the challenges of keeping and training a skilled workforce.
